Balloons add Pop and Pizzazz to any Event

Balloons

Nothing is more traditional than balloons at a birthday party. But not many people are aware that the balloon itself turns 200 years old this year.

History of the Balloon

When Professor Michael Faraday of the Royal Institute of London made the first rubber balloon while experimenting with hydrogen gas in 1824, he could not have foreseen this invention’s evolution over the next century. Production of that first version began in 1825 to be sold as science experiments.

Balloons have many uses, including decorative purposes, entertainment, meteorology, medical treatment, military defense, and transportation. Their low density and cost have led to a wide range of applications, and they are often given for special occasions like birthdays or holidays.

Not long after the discovery, Thomas Hancock began selling a balloon kit that included a bottle of rubber solution and a condensing syringe, for those who wished to create their own balloons. By 1847, J.G. Ingram of London began manufacturing vulcanized toy balloons that were unaffected by temperature changes, which are considered the prototype of modern toy balloons.

By the turn of the 20th century, rubber balloons were being commercially produced in the United States, and their popularity increased throughout the 20th century. In 1912, the first commercial sausage-shaped balloons were produced, and in the late 1930s or early 1940s, Americans began twisting them into animal shapes.

Different Types of Balloons

Another boom in recreational balloon use occurred with the introduction of mylar (foil) balloons in the 1970s. Foil balloons, made of nylon coated with polyethylene and metalized on one side, hold their shape better than rubber balloons, and have been used for NASA’s Space Mission.

Over the last two centuries, the balloon has evolved from experiment to toy, to party favor, to displays and backdrops for photo ops. The professionals at Lucy Blossoms have perfected the technique of creating beautiful balloon arches and feature walls for large celebrations.

Balloons are definitely not just for children’s birthday parties anymore. From intimate family gatherings to large “statement-making” events, we have used balloons at corporate events, birthday parties, bridal showers, baby showers, proposals, engagement parties, anniversaries, brand launches, and fundraisers.
